NDMA warns of flood risks amid forecast of heavy rains

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued an update on the country’s river and weather situation, warning of potential flooding in several regions due to expected rains over the next two days.

According to the National Emergencies Operation Center, rain accompanied by thundershowers is likely in Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Gujrat, Gujranwala, and Lahore divisions. Intermittent rainfall is also forecast for Peshawar, Kohat, Bannu, Sargodha, Faisalabad, and Zhob divisions. Officials fear an increase in river flows as a result of rains in the upper catchment areas.

At present, Guddu Barrage is experiencing a medium flow with 500,000 cusecs, while Sukkur Barrage is witnessing a high flood situation with 571,000 cusecs. Kotri Barrage is also at medium flow but could face a flood situation if rainfall continues. Authorities have further cautioned that hill torrents may swell sharply with additional downpours.

NDMA assured that it is closely monitoring the situation in coordination with relevant agencies, with timely precautionary measures already in place. The authority has instructed all provincial and local departments to ensure advance preparations to handle any possible emergencies.

Citizens have been urged to avoid crossing rivers, bridges, and flooded roads during high-flow conditions. Residents of flood-prone areas are advised to stay alert and follow official announcements and mobile alerts for safety updates.
