ISLAMABAD: A decision has been made to appoint Nehal Hashmi, a leader of the Pakistan Muslim League (N) (PML-N), as the Governor of Sindh.
According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has sent a summary to President Asif Ali Zardari for approval. The prime minister also met Nehal Hashmi and congratulated him on the decision regarding his appointment as Governor of Sindh.
The meeting was also attended by senior political leaders including Rana Sanaullah, Ishaq Dar, and others.
Brief Overview of Nehal Hashmi’s Political Career
Nehal Hashmi, who hails from Karachi, has been associated with PML-N for several decades. From 1997 to 1999, he served as an adviser on law and justice to former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
In 2012, he served as the president of PML-N in Karachi. Later, in August 2014, he was appointed the General Secretary of the party’s Sindh chapter. In 2015, he was elected as a Senator on a PML-N seat from Punjab.
In 2017, Nehal Hashmi was expelled from the party after making a controversial statement related to the Panama Papers scandal. However, his party membership was restored in 2021.
It is worth noting that the current Governor of Sindh is Kamran Khan Tessori, who belongs to the Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-Pakistan).
