ISLAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has sanctioned a minor rise of Rs0.08 per unit in electricity charges nationwide, including Karachi, as part of the monthly fuel cost adjustment for August.
As per NEPRA’s official notification, consumers will see an 8-paisa per unit increase, which will be reflected in electricity bills issued for October. This adjustment applies across all consumer categories, including K-Electric customers, aligning with government policy directives.
The authority explained that this increase is a routine element of the monthly fuel price adjustment mechanism. Notably, this decision comes despite the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) requesting a 19-paisa per unit hike for the same period.Earlier reports indicated that electricity tariffs across Pakistan were expected to rise by Rs0.19 per unit for August 2025, based on the fuel cost adjustment (FCA). The CPPA submitted a petition to NEPRA, which will be reviewed during a public hearing scheduled for today. The adjustment will also impact K-Electric consumers.
In August, a total of approximately 14.22 billion units of electricity were generated, with 13.715 billion units supplied to distribution companies. The actual cost of power supplied was Rs7.50 per unit, compared to a reference rate of Rs7.31 per unit. If NEPRA approves the requested increase, consumers could face an extra financial burden exceeding Rs3 billion.
Meanwhile, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Pakistan has filed a petition in the Sindh High Court challenging NEPRA’s decision that permitted K-Electric to recover Rs74 billion in losses due to electricity theft and unpaid bills. The move is expected to raise costs for legitimate consumers, as it allows KE to pass on unrecovered amounts to consumers’ bills.
