WEB DESK: New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips showcased an exceptional stretch of batting with centuries that paved the way for a 41-run victory over India in the third ODI held in Indore on Sunday. This result secured New Zealand’s first-ever ODI series win in India.
Chasing a challenging target of 337, India struggled to maintain momentum despite a valiant effort from veteran Virat Kohli, who scored a fighting 124.
The hosts started poorly, losing wickets at regular intervals, but Kohli briefly revived hopes as he stitched an 88-run partnership with Nitish Kumar Reddy, who contributed 53 runs.
However, New Zealand bowler Kristian Clarke dismissed Reddy, slowing down India’s progress as the required run rate surged. Kohli later joined forces with Harshit Rana, who played an impressive knock of 52 runs off 43 balls, further reigniting hopes for the Indian team.
Kohli reached his remarkable 54th ODI century before a game-changing over by Zak Foulkes shifted the tide.
The defining moment came two overs later when Kohli mistimed a shot, sending it straight to Mitchell at long-off, confirming New Zealand’s victory.
Reflecting on the defeat, Indian captain Shubman Gill expressed disappointment: “Coming into this game at 1-1, this performance was not up to the mark. There are many areas we need to improve. Virat and Harshit’s batting were the positives we can take away.”
The triumph was especially symbolic for New Zealand, as they broke their streak of seven consecutive ODI series defeats in India.
The sides will now shift focus to a five-match T20 International series running from January 21-31, which serves as critical preparation for the T20 World Cup starting February 7, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.
