Newborn allegedly missing after twin delivery at Quetta Civil Hospital

QUETTA: A family has raised serious concerns after claiming that one of two newborns allegedly went missing following the delivery of twins at Quetta Civil Hospital.

According to the family, Nageena Begum was admitted to the hospital’s gynaecology ward around 11pm on Sunday and underwent a Caesarean section. They said she had been carrying twins but were handed only one baby after the procedure.

The family alleged that both ultrasound reports and hospital records had indicated a twin pregnancy. However, they claimed hospital staff later informed them that only one child had been delivered.

Shehzad Ali, the woman’s brother-in-law and a resident of Arbab Town along Sariab Road, said the family had received multiple confirmations that two babies were expected.

“We were informed through ultrasound reports that there were two babies,” he said, adding that a private hospital had also confirmed the twin pregnancy.

The family has produced an obstetrical ultrasound report showing a twin pregnancy at around 34 weeks and six days, with fetal heart activity detected in both fetuses. The report also noted an anterior placenta and adequate liquor.

Shehzad alleged that hospital doctors had so far failed to explain what happened to the second newborn and appealed to the authorities to conduct a transparent investigation.

Responding to the allegations, Civil Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Abdul Hadi Kakar said an inquiry committee has been constituted to investigate the matter.

He said the family would be informed about the findings once the inquiry is completed.

The case comes shortly after a similar controversy in Karachi, where a family claimed that their newborn had disappeared from a private hospital in Nazimabad following a delivery procedure.

An investigation into that case, however, concluded that the woman had falsely claimed to have been pregnant.
