ISLAMABAD: The inaugural session of the National Finance Commission (NFC) concluded on Thursday with a decision to establish six to seven working groups aimed at creating a structured roadmap for discussions.
The session focused on deliberating a potential new revenue-sharing arrangement between the central government and the federating units.
The next meeting of the finance commission is scheduled to take place on January 8 or 15, 2026.
A notable decision during the session was the formation of a working group to address matters concerning the former FATA region, prompted by a request from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The meeting, chaired by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, was attended by chief ministers of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Sindh, Sohail Afridi and Murad Ali Shah, respectively, along with provincial finance ministers, the finance adviser of KP, the Chairman of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), and other commission members.
Negotiations over federal resource-sharing are expected to be challenging due to the Centre’s concerns over constrained resources, growing debt servicing obligations, and increased provincial demands for a larger share of resources.
