LAHORE: A resolution has been introduced in the Punjab Assembly recommending the nomination of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Chief of Defence Forces, Field Marshal Asim Munir, and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar for the Nobel Peace Prize. The motion commends their diplomatic efforts in de-escalating tensions between the US and Iran amid ongoing Middle East conflicts.
The resolution, submitted by PML-N Chief Whip Rana Muhammad Arshad, highlights the significance of their role in fostering peace and stability in the region. It underscores that Pakistan’s successful mediation led to a historic US-Iran ceasefire, which was brokered just hours before a critical deadline set by former President Donald Trump.
International attention was captured when Islamabad facilitated a dialogue resulting in the US agreeing to a two-week ceasefire with Iran, following discussions involving Prime Minister Shehbaz and Field Marshal Munir. The Pakistani leadership also urged President Trump to extend the deadline, a request that was ultimately granted, allowing diplomatic negotiations to progress.
Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar was actively involved with all parties, including Washington and Tehran, and played a crucial role in bringing the two nations to the negotiating table. As a consequence, Pakistan is preparing to host delegations from both the US and Iran to oversee the implementation of the ceasefire.
The resolution further emphasizes that the ongoing Middle East tensions, especially between Israel, the US, and Iran, have intensified, threatening global peace. It warns that the conflict could rapidly escalate into a broader international crisis. Therefore, the assembly has called for the recognition of the Pakistani leaders’ diplomatic efforts through the Nobel Peace Prize nominations.
