ISLAMABAD: Opposition parties in the National Assembly have strongly criticized the government’s agricultural policies. According to opposition parties, the government has broken the backbone of the country’s economy.
Participating in the National Assembly session on the debate on the Ministry of National Food Security’s austerity drive, PPP’s Naveed Qamar said that 25 per cent of the country’s GDP is based on agriculture. The country’s food and energy sectors are suffering from inflation.
If the farmer is prosperous then the country will develop. The support price of wheat was increased to 1800 because Sindh increased the price to 2,000. If the wheat crop is good then why wheat is being imported.
PML-N National Assembly member Rao Ajmal said that the development of the country is only in agriculture. The subsidy on DAP was 62% during the PML-N era. Cotton cultivation and production has come down drastically while electricity prices for agricultural tube wells have gone up drastically. Agricultural tube wells should be shifted to solar system.
Minister for National Food Security Fakhrumam said agriculture accounts for more than 19% of GDP. We have not been able to achieve global and regional agricultural targets. Due to non-use of modern technology, the cotton crop suffered a decline. Work will be done to increase soybean cultivation during the next financial year
