Opposition parties reject Trump’s Abraham Accords proposal, call for parliamentary transparency

ISLAMABAD: The opposition coalition comprising Tehreek Tahaffuz Ayeen-e-Pakistan (TTAP), Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) has dismissed US President Donald Trump’s recent call for Muslim-majority countries to sign the Abraham Accords with Israel as part of efforts to resolve the Iran conflict.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, TTAP voiced its concerns over Trump’s demands and urged the current government to clarify its stance on the issue and involve parliament in the decision-making process.

This statement followed Trump’s appeal the previous day, in which he urged Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt, and Jordan to collectively join the Abraham Accords, emphasizing the potential for normalizing relations with Israel.

In a detailed post on social media, Trump acknowledged that some countries might have reservations but insisted that most should be “ready, willing, and able” to make the historic move, claiming it could surpass previous agreements in significance. He also suggested that if Iran agrees to its own deal, it could join what he called an “unparalleled World Coalition.”

The Abraham Accords, brokered during Trump’s presidency in 2020, saw the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain sign normalization agreements with Israel.

Reacting to Trump’s proposal, the opposition expressed strong reservations, describing the linkage of peace deals to broader regional issues as a “transparent Israeli agenda.” They emphasized the need for parliamentary debate on the matter, criticizing the accords for failing to pave the way for an independent Palestinian state or halt Israeli violence in Gaza.

The coalition warned that such agreements could weaken Muslim unity and serve as legal cover for Israeli aggression, thus undermining the Palestinian cause.

In a separate statement, PTI’s Secretary General Salman Akram Raja reiterated the party’s stance, stating, “PTI remains committed to a just solution that guarantees an independent, sovereign Palestine with East Jerusalem as its capital. Any move that diverts from this goal is unacceptable.”

Jamaat-e-Islami’s Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman strongly condemned the accords, calling them a “document of surrender.” He criticized Trump’s stance, recalling his recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and his support for Netanyahu’s actions in Gaza, labeling the accords as a betrayal.

Naeemur Rehman asserted that Pakistan’s people would never accept any effort to legitimize Israel’s occupation of Jerusalem, reaffirming that “Palestine belongs to Palestinians, and Jerusalem is its rightful capital.” He emphasized that this stance reflects the legacy of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and must be upheld.

He urged Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to openly reject Trump’s proposal, emphasizing the need for the government to take a firm stand against such illegitimate demands.
