ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has reportedly detained Sultan Aziz Azam, the spokesperson for Daesh-Khorasan and founder of its media division.
According to a recent United Nations (UN) report. The 16th report from the UN Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team states that Azam was taken into custody by Pakistani intelligence agencies.
The report specifies that Azam was arrested on May 16, 2025, and describes him as the creator of the terrorist group’s media branch, Al-Azaim, which plays a crucial role in recruitment and propaganda. Following his detention, the UN noted a significant decline in Daesh-K’s propaganda activities, including the shutdown of prominent platforms like Voice of Khorasan.
The UN assessment suggests that Pakistan’s actions have contributed to a broader weakening of Daesh-Khorasan’s organizational structure on a global scale. Several planned attacks were disrupted, and the number of fighters linked to the group has decreased. Additionally, key senior leaders and ideological figures have been neutralized, further impairing the group’s operations.
The report emphasizes that the arrest of Azam and senior leader Abu Yasir al-Turki has considerably diminished Daesh-Khorasan’s operational capacity. Prior to his role in the terror group, sources indicate Azam served as an advisor to Afghanistan’s Nangarhar provincial council.
The UN report also points to ongoing cross-border attacks from Afghanistan, mainly carried out by the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which it describes as the “most immediate threat” to regional security.
