Pakistan extends airspace restriction for India till 23rd, Jan 2026

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has extended its airspace closure for Indian-registered aircraft by another month, continuing restrictions that have been in place since April last year amid ongoing bilateral tensions.

The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has issued a new Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) with the approval of the federal government, confirming that Pakistan’s airspace will remain closed to Indian aircraft until January 23, 2026.

The notification officially extends the existing ban, which was due to expire earlier.

This ongoing restriction, originally implemented on April 23, 2025, continues to disrupt Indian aviation operations. Indian airlines, struggling with the implications of the prolonged airspace closure, have reportedly approached their government to explore using alternative routes, including access to Chinese airspace.

Reports suggest that the blockade is taking a heavy toll on Indian carriers, especially Air India, as the extended detours have led to longer flight durations and increased operational expenses.

According to a Reuters report, Air India has specifically expressed concerns over the financial strain caused by these restrictions and urged the Indian government to expedite negotiations with China for access to its airspace.

International media outlets have highlighted that the closure not only exacerbates Air India’s ongoing financial crisis but also worsens the airline’s ability to remain cost-effective amid growing challenges. With geopolitical tensions rising and criticism mounting over recent actions by India under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, the situation adds further pressure on the country’s aviation sector.
