PESHAWAR: The devastating floods in northern Pakistan have claimed over 300 lives, with Buner reporting the highest fatalities at 184. According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), the overall death toll has reached 321 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) reported extensive damage, including 74 houses damaged, 63 partially destroyed, and 11 fully destroyed. Authorities warn that ongoing heavy rains are expected to persist until August 21, complicating rescue and relief efforts.
Heavy rainfall and landslides have severely hampered aid delivery, with many roads washed out or blocked. Rescue teams are facing difficulties accessing remote areas, often resorting to foot patrols to evacuate stranded survivors. Unfortunately, most residents are hesitant to leave their homes due to the loss of loved ones or being trapped in debris.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed the NDMA to expedite the supply of tents, medicines, and food to flood-affected regions. The military has mobilized over 600 tonnes of ration and deployed additional troops to support relief operations.
Field Marshal Asim Munir, the Chief of Army Staff, has ordered swift repairs to damaged infrastructure, including bridges, and the deployment of temporary crossings to restore connectivity. The army is actively involved in rescue, relief, and rehabilitation efforts across the affected areas.
