Pakistan mobile users enjoy toll-free calls as PTA launches new service

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) has introduced a new facility allowing all mobile phone users to make free calls to toll-free numbers, such as (0800XXXXX). Previously, this service was exclusively available to fixed-line customers, but now it is accessible to everyone using a mobile device.

In an official statement, PTA clarified that previously, mobile users faced standard call charges when dialing toll-free numbers starting with 0800. After a comprehensive review, the authority decided to take steps to safeguard consumer rights and promote equitable access to telecom services across the country.

Following consultations with major stakeholders—including Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL), the National Telecommunication Corporation (NTC), local loop operators, and cellular service providers—it was collectively agreed that calls to local loop (LL) toll-free numbers will now be free for all users.

PTA emphasized that this initiative underscores its dedication to enhancing consumer protections, ensuring fair access to telecom services, and fostering a more

inclusive and user-friendly telecommunication environment nationwide.

Meanwhile, the PTA also issued a warning to the public regarding the use of illegal foreign SIM cards. The authority highlighted that using unauthorized international SIMs is illegal and poses significant security risks. Calls and messages made via such SIMs could jeopardize personal and financial information and may result in legal consequences. The PTA urged citizens to avoid using unverified foreign SIM cards and to stay compliant with national regulations.
