Pakistan Navy to Induct First Advanced Chinese-Built Submarine Next Year

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is gearing up to commission its first Chinese-built Hangor-class submarine next year, signifying a significant step forward in the nation’s naval modernization program and its deepening defense ties with Beijing.

Admiral Naveed Ashraf, the Chief of Naval Staff, revealed this development during an interview with China’s Global Times. He stated that the $5 billion project involving eight submarines is progressing as planned. According to him, this fleet will markedly enhance Pakistan’s capability to safeguard its maritime interests in the North Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean.

As part of the agreement, four diesel-electric attack submarines are being constructed in China, while the remaining four are slated for assembly in Pakistan. This collaboration aims not only to bolster naval power but also to contribute to local shipbuilding capacity and technological expertise. Already, three of these submarines have been launched into the Yangtze River from a shipyard in Hubei province.

Admiral Ashraf emphasized the reliability and suitability of the Chinese platforms for Pakistan’s operational needs. He also highlighted the navy’s focus on advanced technologies such as unmanned systems, artificial intelligence, and electronic warfare, developed through joint initiatives with China.

Capable of exceptional stealth and endurance, Hangor-class submarines are expected to strengthen Pakistan’s strategic capabilities in regional waters. This development comes as India continues to operate a fleet of nuclear-powered and diesel-electric submarines built in collaboration with France, Germany, and Russia.

With the first Hangor-class submarine poised for induction next year, the Pakistan Navy is set to enter a transformative phase in its maritime defense strategy while further solidifying one of Asia’s most robust strategic alliances.
