Pakistan Railways raises train fares before Eid following fuel price surge

LAHORE: Pakistan Railways has announced a rise in passenger train fares after a sharp increase in diesel prices, a decision that comes just days before Eid-ul-Fitr and is likely to add to travelers’ expenses, ARY News reported.

According to a spokesperson for the railway department, the adjustment in fares became necessary after diesel prices climbed by nearly 20 percent.

Under the revised pricing structure, economy-class tickets have increased by 5 percent, while AC class fares have gone up by 10 percent. In addition, freight charges have been raised by as much as 20 percent.

The new fares will be implemented from March 9. Passengers who purchased tickets prior to the announcement will continue to travel at the previously issued rates.

Railway authorities stated that despite the hike, the department is still covering part of the operational expenses to reduce the financial impact on commuters.

Earlier, the government announced a major increase in fuel prices, raising petrol by Rs55 per litre to Rs321.17, while diesel reached Rs335.86 per litre. The price of kerosene also climbed sharply to Rs318.81 per litre.

Economic experts caution that the steep rise in fuel costs could fuel further inflation, potentially increasing the prices of goods and services nationwide.
