ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has been elected to serve on the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the 2026-2028 period, winning by a substantial majority and reaffirming its role as an active participant in the international human rights arena.
The election was conducted during the United Nations General Assembly session in New York on Tuesday. Alongside Pakistan, thirteen other nations also won seats on the Council. As per the official UN Human Rights Council sources, the newly elected members include Angola, Chile, Ecuador, Egypt, Estonia, India, Iraq, Italy, Mauritius, Slovenia, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and Vietnam.
Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Mohammad Ishaq Dar, shared the news via his official X (formerly Twitter) account, thanking UN member states for their support. “With Allah’s grace, Pakistan has been elected to the UN Human Rights Council for 2026-28 with a commanding majority,” he stated. “My heartfelt appreciation to all member states for their backing!”
Dar emphasized that Pakistan’s election underscores the country’s commitment and credentials in advancing the global human rights agenda.
