ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has announced a temporary suspension of its ongoing counterterrorism operation, Operation Ghazab Lil Haq, in Afghanistan, ahead of the Eid ul-Fitr celebrations.
Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar explained that the decision was made in consultation with Pakistan’s Islamic allies — Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Turkey — and aims to uphold Islamic values and promote goodwill. The pause will be in effect from the night of March 18–19 through the night of March 23–24, 2026.
Tarar emphasized that the operation will resume immediately if there are any cross-border attacks, drone strikes, or terrorist incidents within Pakistan’s territory. The government reaffirmed its commitment to regional peace and cooperation while remaining prepared to respond to any threats.
Operation Ghazab Lil Haq was launched by Pakistan’s armed forces in response to unprovoked cross-border assaults by Afghan Taliban militants, targeting militant hideouts and military sites along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. The initial retaliatory strikes, carried out on the night of February 27, 2026, involved coordinated air and ground assaults, resulting in significant damage to Taliban positions and infrastructure, according to security sources.
Pakistan has reiterated its stance to defend its sovereignty and ensure civilian safety while continuing the operation until all objectives are met. The temporary halt reflects Islamabad’s efforts to balance security measures with regional diplomatic considerations during the festive season.
