Pakistan urges Taliban to choose between Islamabad, militant groups

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has expressed serious reservations over a recent report by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), stating that much of the information in the document appears to rely heavily on the perspective provided by Afghan Taliban authorities.

According to Pakistani officials, this raises concerns about the report’s balance and accuracy, as information verified through independent and credible sources has not been given sufficient weight.

Officials in Islamabad say the government of the Taliban maintains close links with various militant groups and has allowed Afghan territory to be used for terrorist activities against Pakistan. These attacks, they say, have resulted in the deaths of numerous civilians and security personnel across the country.

Pakistan has reportedly made several diplomatic efforts to address the issue, including attempts at mediation through friendly countries. However, officials say these efforts have so far failed to produce any meaningful progress.

The Pakistani government has now delivered a clear message to the Afghan Taliban leadership, urging it to decide whether it wishes to maintain constructive relations with Pakistan or continue providing safe havens to militant organizations.

Authorities emphasized that all counterterrorism operations carried out by Pakistan’s armed forces are conducted with precision, professionalism, and responsibility. They added that such operations are based on credible and verified intelligence.

According to the statement, security forces prioritize the protection of civilians during these operations and take extraordinary precautions to avoid collateral damage. Militants are typically targeted in remote areas far from civilian populations, even at significant distances from sensitive zones such as the Kabul Green Zone.

Pakistan also voiced concern that militant elements are receiving shelter and protection inside Afghanistan, enabling them to maintain safe havens and continue activities that pose a direct threat to regional stability and Pakistan’s national security.

Meanwhile, officials also highlighted a deadly terrorist attack that occurred earlier today in Miranshah, which resulted in severe harm to innocent civilians, including children. Pakistan expressed hope that the United Nations mission will report such incidents with the same seriousness and impartiality to ensure an accurate reflection of ground realities.

Pakistan reaffirmed its commitment to working constructively with the United Nations and other international partners in the fight against terrorism, aiming to promote lasting peace and stability in the region.
