ISLAMABAD: The federal government is considering tighter regulations for social media platforms in Pakistan amid concerns over child exploitation and the spread of obscene material online.
The Ministry of Interior has prepared a set of proposals that include introducing a minimum age requirement for social media users and addressing inappropriate content allegedly being circulated under the banner of family vlogging.
Before any legislation or regulatory framework is finalised, the ministry plans to hold consultations with relevant institutions and stakeholders.
A meeting has been convened at the Interior Ministry to examine the proposed measures and decide the way forward. Officials from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA), and federal and provincial police departments are expected to attend.
Age restrictions under consideration
The proposed introduction of a minimum age for social media access is among the key issues to be discussed. Officials are expected to examine reported cases involving the exploitation of children and the circulation of inappropriate material on digital platforms.
The meeting will also consider possible safeguards against the misuse of family vlogging, particularly where children are featured in content that may be considered inappropriate or exploitative.
Possible platform restrictions
The government is also examining whether restrictions, including possible bans on certain social media platforms, could be considered as part of a broader regulatory framework.
Officials will review approaches adopted by other countries, including Australia, to assess how different jurisdictions have addressed child safety and harmful online content.
A detailed briefing on cases involving child exploitation and obscene material is also expected to be presented during the consultation.
The government has not yet taken a final decision on age restrictions, platform bans or other regulatory measures. Any proposed changes will be considered after consultations with the relevant authorities and stakeholders.
