Pakistani Cricketer Haider Ali exonerated in UK alleged rape case

LONDON: Pakistani international cricketer Haider Ali has been officially cleared of any wrongdoing in an alleged rape case after authorities in Greater Manchester concluded there was not enough evidence to support the claims made by a British-Pakistani woman.

Sources from Greater Manchester Police and the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) confirmed exclusively to Geo News that the case against Ali has been closed due to lack of sufficient proof.Ali was advised by criminal law specialist Barrister Moeen Khan throughout the proceedings. The 24-year-old had been under investigation following accusations from a British-Pakistani woman who alleged that he assaulted her at a hotel in Manchester. The police received her report on August 4, which led to Ali’s arrest on the same day.

According to the woman, she first encountered Ali on July 23, 2025, at a Manchester hotel where she claims the incident occurred. She later met him again on August 1 in Ashford, approximately four hours away from Manchester by train. Her formal complaint was filed around two weeks after their initial meeting, on August 5.Police sources told Geo News that Ali is now free to leave the UK. He has already retrieved his passport from the police station and is free to depart at any time.

During his police interview, Ali vehemently denied the allegations, stating that he knew the woman well and considered her a friend. He expressed his shock at the accusations.Ali was detained at the Spitfire County Cricket Ground in Kent, from the players’ canteen, and taken into custody at Canterbury Police Station by Kent Police officers.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had placed Ali under a provisional suspension during the course of the investigation.Ali has represented Pakistan in 35 T20 internationals since his debut in 2020, along with two One Day Internationals.
