Pakistani dramas have potential to expand on netflix, Amazon: Ahsan Iqbal

KARACHI: Ahsan Iqbal, Federal Minister for Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives, highlighted the promising prospects of showcasing Pakistani dramas and films on leading international streaming services like Netflix and Amazon. He emphasized that Pakistan’s entertainment industry possesses significant potential to make a global impact.

During a roundtable discussion with prominent Pakistani producers, directors, and actors in Karachi, Iqbal called for a collective effort to modernize and innovate storytelling within the sector. He underscored the importance of revitalizing the industry by adopting new narratives and cutting-edge techniques.

Key figures such as director Nadeem Baig, producer Satish Anand, and actress Hina Khawaja Bayat were present at the meeting. Iqbal pointed out Pakistan’s rich cultural legacy in music, arts, and television, noting that while Pakistani dramas enjoy international acclaim, they are still underrepresented on major digital platforms. He urged industry stakeholders to work towards increasing global visibility for local content.

The minister also expressed concern over stagnation in the local film industry, which produces only a limited number of films annually. He encouraged filmmakers to pursue innovative stories and avoid repetitive themes, especially negative portrayals like those of police officers, which can reinforce stereotypes. Instead, he suggested highlighting the stories of honorable police officers and other underrepresented groups.

Describing actors, filmmakers, and producers as Pakistan’s “ambassadors of soft power,” Iqbal stressed their role in shaping the country’s international image. He assured government support to help the industry access global dubbing markets and reach diverse audiences worldwide.

Highlighting the importance of patriotic storytelling, Iqbal emphasized telling the stories of national heroes and fostering awareness about figures like Allama Iqbal among Pakistani youth. He also pointed to international examples, such as China’s rise in global cinema through innovative techniques and export strategies, as lessons for Pakistan.

Director Nadeem Baig appreciated the government’s proactive engagement, calling it a historic move. Producer Satish Anand echoed that compelling content, when supported adequately, can overcome international barriers. Actress Hina Khawaja Bayat highlighted the need for timely regulation, including prompt payments to artists and industry professionals.

Overall, the meeting underscored a shared vision for elevating Pakistan’s entertainment sector onto the global stage through innovation, strategic support, and storytelling that reflects the country’s diverse heritage
