Panama JIT: Meeting underway over seeking services of audit firm

Islamabad (May 16, 2017): The meeting  of the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) formed on the order of the Supreme Court to probe the Panama case has begun.According to the details, The Joint Investigation Team (JIT), constituted to probe the allegations of financial irregularities and money laundering involving the prime minister and his family for establishing properties abroad, is holding its meeting today (Tuesday).

Additional Director Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), Wajid Zia is chairing the meeting being held at the Secretariat, housed in the Federal Judicial Academy. The meeting will make the decision whether to seek the services of a foreign audit firm.

The six-member team is reviewing the documents/the relevant record summoned from the ministries and authorities concerned.

It is the third meeting of the probe team, constituted by Supreme Court’s special bench on May 05 to probe Panama Papers allegations against ruling Sharif family. The first meeting was held last Monday.

The special bench, headed by Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan and comprising Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed and Justice Ijazul Ahsen had issued the order while hearing into the implementation of the Panama Papers verdict case.

In its last meeting Thursday, the JIT had sought from the Election Commission of Pakistan asset declarations submitted to the electoral body by the premier and his son-in-law Captain (retd) Safdar, Geo News had quoted sources as saying.

The probe team has sought the prime minister’s assets declarations from 2013 to 2016.

The court has directed the JIT to complete the investigation in 60 days besides submitting fortnightly progress reports as stipulated in the order.
