ISLAMABAD: The Parliamentary National Security committee is expected to hold a closed-door meeting on Wednesday or Thursday, chaired by National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq.
Sources indicate that the entire House will be transformed into the Security Committee to receive a detailed briefing on the escalating terrorism in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Baluchistan. All federal ministers and leaders of parliamentary parties have also been invited.
The session will review the implementation of the National Action Plan and is anticipated to decide on intensifying operations against militants. Additionally, the proposal for a National Action Plan II, presented by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, will be discussed.
Members will be briefed on the current security situation, address their queries, and finalize future strategies.
According to reports, the meeting is being called in response to the recent surge in terrorist activities in the northwestern and southwestern regions of Pakistan. This includes multiple high-profile attacks on security forces and public infrastructure.
The National Action Plan, introduced in 2014, aims to counter terrorism through a comprehensive framework, including the regulation of madrassas, blocking terrorist financing, and improving law enforcement capabilities. However, growing concerns about the resurgence of militant activities have led to calls for a revised and more robust plan.
Sources suggest that the committee may also deliberate on enhancing coordination between federal and provincial agencies to combat terrorism more effectively. The proposal for National Action Plan II seeks to address gaps in the original framework and adapt to evolving security challenges.
It remains to be seen whether the government will announce new policy measures following the meeting, but insiders indicate that there is growing consensus on adopting a more aggressive approach toward militant groups operating within Pakistan’s borders.
