Peace committees established in Kurram to restore safety and resolve conflicts

PESHAWAR: In a significant step towards restoring peace and stability in the Kurram region, local peace committees have been formed, bringing together a diverse group of tribal, political, and community leaders.

The newly formed committees, which include representatives from all sects and communities, have already facilitated the safe transport of critical supplies. The first convoy of vehicles, carrying food and other essential goods, is scheduled to depart from Thall to Parachinar on January 4, 2025, at 10:00 AM, with police protection in place to ensure safety during the journey.

The initiative follows a landmark peace agreement finalized on January 1, 2025, where local leaders from Kurram pledged to set aside personal, tribal, and sectarian disputes for the sake of restoring peace. Under the agreement, it was committed that disarmament will be completed within 15 days, and bunkers will be dismantled within one month to reduce the risk of further conflict.

In addition to the community leaders, law enforcement agencies will remain on standby to manage any emergencies and provide additional security if needed.

The peace process is crucial, as the ongoing issues in Kurram have often been misunderstood as sectarian violence. In reality, many of the challenges are rooted in local land disputes and tribal conflicts, which have fueled tensions in the region. By focusing on resolving these underlying issues, the peace committees hope to foster long-term stability and cooperation among the different groups in Kurram.

The committees consist of 27 members from Lower Kurram, including former MNA Pir Haider Ali Shah, and 48 members from Upper Kurram, led by ex-Senator Sajjad Hussain Turi. Their leadership and collective efforts are seen as a vital step toward fostering peace in an area long plagued by conflict.
