PESHAWAR: Police have arrested the owner of a private school in Dir Colony, Peshawar, after a roof collapse claimed at least 35 lives, including children and two female teachers, while several other victims remain in critical condition.
The tragedy occurred when the roof of the school building suddenly caved in, prompting emergency services to launch a large-scale rescue operation.
Confirming the arrest, the Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Peshawar said the school was being operated under the name of an educational trust. He added that the building was poorly constructed, which reportedly contributed to the collapse.
Rescue personnel are facing significant difficulties in reaching victims due to the weakened condition of the structure and the narrow streets surrounding the school. A Rescue 1122 spokesperson said heavy machinery could not be deployed because of concerns that further damage to the unstable building could endanger those trapped inside.
The limited access to the site has also hampered the movement of rescue equipment, complicating efforts to clear the debris and assist the victims.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expresses grief
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed profound sorrow over the loss of lives in the incident and extended his condolences to the families of the deceased.
He prayed for the elevation of the ranks of those who lost their lives, particularly the children, and asked for strength and patience for their grieving families.
The prime minister also prayed for the early recovery of the injured and directed the authorities concerned to ensure the provision of the best possible medical care. He further ordered officials to expedite rescue and relief efforts at the site.
KP governor seeks detailed report
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi also expressed deep grief over the deaths, describing the loss of innocent children as an extremely painful tragedy.
In a statement, the governor conveyed his heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved families and directed the relevant authorities to submit a detailed report on the incident.
He also called for an investigation to establish the circumstances and determine the cause of the roof collapse.
