ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reaffirmed that the prices of petrol and diesel will stay at current levels, providing relief to consumers.
In a televised address to the nation, the Prime Minister conveyed warm Eid wishes, highlighting that Eid-ul-Fitr is a time for national unity and shared responsibility. He urged citizens to celebrate the occasion by spreading joy and caring for those around them.
The Prime Minister also addressed the broader global situation, noting that the world is confronting extraordinary difficulties. He pointed out that regional conflicts have disrupted global stability and economic growth, while attacks on energy infrastructure in nearby countries have worsened the crisis.
He expressed concern over soaring international oil prices, mentioning that crude oil, which was trading at $72 a barrel just a few weeks ago, has soared to $158 per barrel. This sharp increase has triggered inflationary pressures worldwide. He added that in March, fuel prices rose by Rs55 per liter, adding financial strain on the public.
Regarding potential fuel price increases, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated that he has rejected any proposals to raise rates. He revealed that there were suggestions to hike petrol prices by Rs50 and diesel by Rs74 per liter. Considering the current economic climate, such hikes would significantly burden ordinary citizens, and the government has decided to keep fuel prices steady to provide relief during these challenging times.
