Pir Kaleem Khursheed of Asma Group Wins SCBA Election

Lahore (October 31, 2017): Nominee of Asma Jahangir’s Independent group Peer Syed Muhammad Kaleem Ahmed Khursheed has won Supreme Court Bar Association’s elections on Tuesday.

The group’s candidate Pir Kaleem Khursheed bagged 1,145 votes, defeating Hafiz Abdur Rehman of Hamid Khan’s Professional Group who could secure only 1,062 votes.

Safdar Hussain Tarar achieved 1,098 votes against 638 votes of Professional Group’s Mian Muhammad Aslam.

A very close contest was observed between the presidential candidates as the winning candidate marked victory with a narrow margin of only 83 votes.

After his winning, Pir Kaleem Khursheed thanked the lawyers for voting him and said that he will not associate Bar with any political party.He said that all the political parties voted for me and I will work for Lawyers and Nation as well. We need to follow the golden principles of Quaid e Azam to make Pakistan a stronger state.

Earlier,  the polling started at 9:00 am continued till 5:00 pm without any interval. Polling was held in Multan, Bahawalpur, and Abbottabad, where polling stations have been established.

A close competition was expected between the candidates of Asma Jahangir and Hamid Khan groups for the seat of president.

Syed Muhammad Kaleem Ahmed Khursheed was the nominee of Jahangir’s Independent group, while Hafiz Abdul Rehman Ansari enjoyed the support of Hamid Khan-led Professional group.

As many as 44 candidates are contesting the election for 22 seats of the association.A total of 2,989 voters can cast their votes, and most of the registered voters are based in Lahore.

Chairman Election Board Afrasiyab Khan is monitoring the election process.

Last year, Rashid Rizvi, of the Hamid Khan-led group, was elected the SCBA president.
