PM directs early preparations for next monsoon

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has instructed authorities to begin preparations to prevent the loss of life and property during the upcoming monsoon season.

He presided over a review meeting in Islamabad today, focusing on the climatic challenges faced due to climate change and the corresponding mitigation plan for the next monsoon.

The Prime Minister approved the short-term plan proposed by the Ministry of Climate Change and ordered its immediate implementation. He emphasized that the Ministry of Climate Change, Ministry of Planning, and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) must collaborate with provincial governments to develop a comprehensive strategy addressing climate change challenges.

Additionally, he directed preparations for convening a National Water Council meeting to devise a national plan for improved water management.

During the meeting, Shehbaz Sharif remarked that Pakistan, as a developing nation, is compelled to allocate a significant portion of its GDP every three years to combat the severe impacts of climate change. These efforts redirect critical resources away from development projects toward mitigating environmental hazards. He further underscored that despite Pakistan’s minimal contribution to global climate change, the country continues to grapple with its devastating effects.

Federal Ministers Ahsan Iqbal, Ahad Khan Cheema, Muhammad Aurangzeb, Dr. Musadik Malik, Attaullah Tarar, and other key officials were present at the meeting.
