ISLAMABAD: On Friday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif convened a high-level session to assess the progress of Afghan refugee repatriation efforts, with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Chief Minister Sohail Afridi notably absent. Instead, his adviser, Muzzammil Aslam, represented KP at the meeting, as per official communications.
The gathering included senior officials such as Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, federal ministers, the Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and the chief ministers of Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, and Gilgit-Baltistan. High-ranking federal and provincial officials also participated.
In his opening remarks, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif mentioned that he had spoken to CM Sohail Afridi a day prior, congratulating him on his appointment and reaffirming the federal government’s commitment to provincial cooperation. “Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is a vital part of the federation, and the federal government is committed to working hand-in-hand with all provinces for the progress and well-being of our people,” he emphasized.
Shehbaz Sharif highlighted Pakistan’s historical support for Afghanistan through challenging times but voiced concerns over ongoing cross-border terrorism and Afghan involvement in militant activities within Pakistan. “It is deeply troubling that Afghan territory continues to be exploited for terrorist acts against Pakistan,” he stated.
The Prime Minister also praised the Pakistan Army for countering recent attacks originating from across the Afghan border, particularly lauding Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir’s leadership. “Under his command, our armed forces have successfully resisted aggression from Afghanistan and responded effectively to Indian hostilities. The nation stands united in honoring the professionalism and bravery of our forces,” he added.
Briefings during the meeting revealed that, as of October 16, 2025, approximately 1,477,592 Afghan nationals had been repatriated through the phased return plan. Officials noted that only Afghans with valid Pakistani visas would be permitted to remain in the country, and the number of border crossing points was being increased to expedite the process.
Shehbaz Sharif directed authorities to ensure that Afghan returnees, especially vulnerable groups such as the elderly, women, and children, be treated with dignity and care. He called for seamless coordination among all provincial and federal agencies to facilitate a swift and organized repatriation of illegal Afghan residents.
The participants lauded Pakistan’s diplomatic initiatives and acknowledged the critical leadership roles played by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir in safeguarding national security.
The meeting concluded with a consensus to rigorously implement all directives concerning border security and the repatriation process, ensuring a coordinated and effective approach.
