PM Shehbaz warns of renewed terror threat linked to Afghanistan

ASHGABAT: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday cautioned that militant activity is once again gaining momentum from Afghan territory, calling on the global community to hold Afghan authorities accountable for preventing cross-border terrorism.

Speaking at an international forum in Ashgabat marking three decades of Turkmenistan’s permanent neutrality, the prime minister expressed appreciation for the country’s hospitality and described the capital as a city symbolising peace and elegance. He welcomed the UN’s decision to designate 2025 as the International Year of Peace and Trust, praising Turkmenistan’s role in advancing global harmony.

The prime minister underscored Pakistan’s engagement at the United Nations Security Council, noting that terrorism continues to pose a serious challenge to regional stability. He stressed that lasting peace requires collective international action, particularly to ensure that Afghan soil is not used for militant operations against neighbouring states.

Reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to diplomacy, PM Shehbaz said peaceful conflict resolution remains central to Islamabad’s foreign policy. He highlighted Pakistan’s support for the Gaza Peace Plan, stating that the UNSC-backed initiative had helped ease the suffering of millions of Palestinians affected by the ongoing conflict.

He also referred to UNSC Resolution 2788, saying it reflected Pakistan’s long-standing vision for sustainable peace. As part of the Arab-Islamic bloc, Pakistan continues to advocate for an enduring ceasefire and unimpeded humanitarian aid in the Middle East.

Linking peace with prosperity, the prime minister said sustainable development cannot be achieved without stability. He pointed to the 2030 Agenda as a roadmap for inclusive global growth, adding that Pakistan is focusing on financial inclusion, women’s economic empowerment, and environmentally responsible development.

Addressing global challenges such as climate change and widening inequality, PM Shehbaz stressed the need for developing countries to gain equitable access to modern technologies. He commended Turkmenistan’s efforts in promoting dialogue and urged the international community to turn commitments into practical outcomes.

Concluding his address, the prime minister called on world leaders to abandon “zero-sum” approaches and instead work toward cooperation that strengthens connections between economies, societies, and ideas.
