PM to Face Consequences if Children Failed to Prove Trail: SC

Islamabad (July 20, 2017):  The three-member special bench hearing Panama case on Thursday observed that if the Prime Minister’s children are failed to satisfy the court on the money trail, Prime Minister would have to face the consequences.

During the course of hearing of the Panama case, Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan, while addressing the PM children counsel Salman Akran Raja said that if the prime minister’s children failed to give convincing answers about the money trail, Nawaz Sharif would have to suffer the consequences since he holds a public office.

The judge remarked that in that case the court would be compelled to take a decision against the Prime Minister. At the outset of hearing the bench expressed its displeasure over the ‘media trial’ outside the court, saying that the documents submitted by Raja were already being debated in the media.

In response, Raja said that he had mot provide the media with any material or documents.

During his arguments, Raja said his client, Hussain, was not asked questions regarding the UAE Justice Ministry’s letter during his JIT sessions.Raja presented to the court documents detailing cargo shipments from UAE to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Advancing arguments Raja objected to the JIT’s conclusion that recording Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al-Thani’s statement would be unnecessary, urging the court that there should be a complete inquiry into the matter. The bench dismissed the counsel request for further investigations, saying that since the JIT had completed its work, the documents [relating to the two Qatari letters] had been sent to the registrar. The judges said that the court would give its decision based on the documents and evidence not on the basis of JIT recommendation.

However, in its report, the JIT had said that recording the Qatari dignitary’s statement would be an “exercise in futility” since he was not expected to provide any documents to substantiate his claims and therefore, discarded the two letters.Salman Akram Raja earlier submitted further documents on behalf of his clients before the SC, including one acquired from Abu Dhabi customs to show that scrap and machinery from the Gulf Steel Mills did move from Dubai after its liquidation, and an invoice from Ahli Steel Company verifying the shipment of dismantled rolling mill equipment from the Al-Azizia Steel Company. The lawyer also presented a document from JPCA Ltd, an accountancy firm, dealing with the ownership of Nescoll and Neilsen, as well as papers from Minerva Financial Services Limited, the holding firm for both companies.

Later the court adjourned hearing of the case till tomorrow.
