PML-N to seek National Assembly backing for emergency in KP

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has decided to seek National Assembly approval for imposing an emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa,

The decision was made at a meeting of the party’s parliamentary group in Islamabad. The National Assembly is expected to consider a resolution supporting the move on Wednesday.

Speaking to reporters, Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah said the government believed action in the province was necessary, arguing that the fight against terrorism had to be won. He expressed confidence that the situation would improve and said terrorism must be eliminated.

Sanaullah accused the PTI-led provincial government of failing to provide full cooperation against militancy, while praising the Balochistan government’s role in counterterrorism efforts. He also alleged that the PTI’s political narrative echoed that of terrorist groups.

He said militant demands included separating Balochistan from Pakistan, and questioned the possibility of negotiations with groups he said opposed the country’s integrity. Sanaullah added that Saudi Arabia, China, Türkiye and Qatar had tried to help resolve the issue, but that the Afghan government had not accepted their proposals.

He identified the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan and what he called “Fitna al-Khawarij” elements as being involved in terrorism. He also cited extortion, non-custom-paid vehicles and drug trafficking as criminal activities linked to the spread of militancy.
