Pope Francis shifted back on ventilator

Vatican: Pope Francis is under observation following two instances of “acute respiratory failure” that occurred on Monday afternoon.

Doctors had to step in to remove mucus from the Pope’s lungs, according to an update from the Holy See, which noted that he remained alert during the procedure.

The 88-year-old pontiff has resumed the use of an oxygen mask and ventilator to assist his breathing, but remains “alert, focused and cooperative”, the Vatican said.

This marks the third significant health decline for the 88-year-old pontiff, who was hospitalized 18 days ago due to pneumonia.

Earlier today, the Pope underwent two bronchoscopies, during which doctors successfully cleared a buildup of secretions from his airways.

In the afternoon, he received supplemental oxygen via a mask to assist with his breathing, as reported by the Vatican.

Despite the challenges, the pontiff remained alert and engaged throughout the procedures.

Vatican officials described the afternoon as “complicated,” noting that an acute respiratory crisis had occurred but was resolved, and the Pope is now resting comfortably.
