ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has decided to halt its parliamentary cooperation with the federal government, party sources said on Monday, amid growing differences with the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).
According to sources, the PPP will continue withholding support until its leadership takes a fresh decision on its future course.
The party has instructed its lawmakers not to support government-sponsored legislation in standing committees. PPP members will instead oppose government bills and may propose amendments during committee proceedings.
The decision follows earlier directions from the PPP leadership to its parliamentarians and senior figures to avoid direct contact with PML-N ministers and leaders.
Party sources said PPP lawmakers have also been advised not to respond to political messages from PML-N representatives. The instructions apply to contacts with both federal and provincial ministers.
Relations between the two coalition partners have deteriorated in recent days following disagreements over the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) election results and allegations of electoral irregularities, putting their existing power-sharing arrangement under increasing strain.
The PPP is also considering convening a meeting of its Central Executive Committee (CEC) to discuss the political situation and determine the party’s next strategy. Sources said the meeting is likely to be held after the completion of the AJK election process.
