ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari has signed the legislation concerning child marriage.
Regarding this matter, the bill on child marriage was introduced in the National Assembly by Sharmila Faruqui, while in the Senate, it was presented by Sherry Rehman.
According to the law, a marriage registrar will not officiate a marriage where one or both parties are under 18 years of age.
Anyone violating this law by conducting such a marriage can face up to one year of imprisonment and a fine of one hundred thousand rupees.
Additionally, if a man over 18 marries a girl who is underage, he can be sentenced to three years in prison. This legislation is a significant step towards protecting children from inappropriate marriages and ensuring their rights are upheld.
