ISLAMABAD: Foreign Office spokesperson Dr Mohammad Faisal on Wednesday said that recent comments of Premier Imran Khan regarding Afghanistan have been reported out of context in the media which has led to an unwarranted reaction from various quarters.

In his explanatory statement, Dr Faisal said that the vital role Pakistan played bringing US-Taliban talks to such breakthrough to resolve the prolonged Afghanistan issue should not be neglected.

“Pakistan seeks no desire of obtaining any benefit from successfully resolving Afghanistan issue. PrimeMinister Imran Khan took personal interest to foster peace and resolve the issue”, FO spokesperson stated.

“Prime Minister’s statements should not be considered a hurdle in the talks because such talks produce misunderstandings”, he added.

Reiterating Pakistan agenda of welcoming peace in the region, Dr Faisal said that Premier Imran Khan issued his statements considering the contemporary regional situation.

Earlier on Monday, prime minister Imran Khan said that the US-Taliban talks could get more smooth if an interim Afghan government is constituted as militant groups refuse to contact the current Afghan government.

He added that the Afghan government was an obstacle in the peace process.

Later, Afghanistan, calling PM Khan’s statement “irresponsible” recalled its ambassador to Pakistan.
