PTA Issues advisory against illegal online content, scam messages

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a stern warning to individuals involved in disseminating unlawful content via social media and digital platforms.

In an official statement, the PTA emphasized the importance of responsible online behavior, urging users to avoid posting or endorsing illegal material. While recognizing that freedom of expression is a constitutional right, the authority clarified that this right does not extend to activities that violate laws or incite harm.

The PTA highlighted that sharing content that blasphemes, insults religious figures, incites violence, spreads hatred or misinformation about defense and government institutions, or circulating obscene, immoral, or false information is strictly prohibited under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016 and can lead to legal action.

Citizens are encouraged to report any such content through the PTA’s Complaint Management System (CMS) mobile app to help maintain public safety and social harmony. The message from PTA is clear: “Stay vigilant, protect yourself, and contribute to national peace.”In addition to content warnings, PTA recently issued guidance warning users to remain cautious of malicious messages impersonating courier companies. These messages often contain fake verification codes and lure recipients into revealing personal data.

Fraudsters impersonate courier service representatives, sending deceptive texts to obtain sensitive information, request payments, or trick users into clicking malicious links. Such messages are entirely unaffiliated with any legitimate courier or official authority.

PTA advises the public not to share verification codes or personal details with anyone and to ignore unsolicited messages or calls requesting sensitive information. The authority reiterated that these scam messages are fraudulent and should be treated with suspicion to avoid falling victim to cybercrimes.
