LAHORE: In a decisive political move, members of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in the Punjab Assembly have tendered their resignations from all standing committees, including their leadership roles. The resignations were formally submitted on Friday to the Speaker’s Office and have been officially accepted.
Khalid Mahmood, Acting Secretary General of the Punjab Assembly, confirmed receipt of the resignations and stamped them as received, marking a significant step in PTI’s ongoing legislative withdrawals.
Earlier, several PTI lawmakers, including Hafiz Farhat Abbas, resigned from the Environment and Home Affairs Committees. Other members like Sana Karimi, Rana Shehbaz, Awais Virk, Malik Mumtaz, Farukh Javed Moon, and Sheikh Imtiaz also stepped down from their respective committee roles. Additionally, MPAs such as Ahmar Rasheed Bhatti resigned from multiple influential committees, including those focused on Energy, Law Enforcement, Legislation, Planning & Development, and Labour & Human Resources. He also withdrew from the Business Advisory and Ethics Committees, submitting all resignations simultaneously.
Imran Khan, the founding leader of PTI, had directed party representatives to immediately resign from all standing committees in the Punjab Assembly, according to PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan. He clarified that PTI currently oversees 14 standing committees in Punjab Gohar Ali Khan explained that the resignations are part of a strategic shift in PTI’s political approach, and the decision was made directly by Imran Khan as part of the party’s broader political tactics.
This move follows PTI’s previous step last month when lawmakers resigned en masse from committees in the National Assembly and Senate on Khan’s orders. The party also announced plans to boycott upcoming by-elections, signaling a continued stance of opposition against the current government.
