PTI urges SC for immediate hearing on 26th Amendment case

ISLAMABAD: Barrister Gohar demands exclusion of new judges, criticizes government’s handling of talks

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has formally requested the Supreme Court to expedite the hearing of the 26th Amendment case, arguing that new judges should not be included in the proceedings.

During a press conference, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, alongside other party leaders, criticized the government’s approach, stating that the amendment was passed under questionable circumstances. He highlighted that following the amendment, new judges were appointed to both the Supreme Court and High Courts, while PTI’s and civil society’s petitions challenging the move were ignored.

“Our demand is clear the Supreme Court must immediately hear the petitions against the 26th Amendment, and new judges should not be part of the hearing,” Gohar asserted.

Barrister Gohar also emphasized that PTI had sought a political resolution to ongoing issues but accused the government of abandoning negotiations. “We initiated talks with the government, but they backed out, wasting an opportunity for political reconciliation,” he added. Referring to PTI’s founder, Gohar lamented that letters written by the former prime minister were also disregarded.
