LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Vice Chairman and former Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi was discharged from the Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC) after an eight-day hospitalization due to chest pain. Following his release, a heavy police contingent escorted him back to jail.
Qureshi was initially shifted to PIC from jail on May 17 after complaining of chest discomfort. According to his lawyer, Rana Mudassir, the PTI leader was transferred to the hospital after Fajr prayers, following an initial medical assessment by prison doctors. At PIC, Qureshi underwent multiple diagnostic tests as part of a comprehensive cardiac evaluation.
His legal team confirmed that the jail authorities promptly informed Qureshi’s family of his condition and kept them updated throughout his treatment.
Qureshi’s hospital discharge comes amid ongoing legal proceedings. Earlier, an Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Rawalpindi formally indicted Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, and 14 other PTI leaders in connection with the GHQ attack case.
In a separate high-profile development, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) acquitted both former Prime Minister Imran Khan and Shah Mehmood Qureshi in the cipher case. The verdict, delivered by IHC Chief Justice Aamir Farooq and Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb, overturned their earlier conviction.
It is worth noting that in January of the previous year, both Khan and Qureshi were sentenced to 10 years in prison under the Official Secrets Act in the same cipher case.
