Punjab Assembly Moves to De-Seat 26 Opposition Lawmakers Over Misconduct

LAHORE: Legal efforts are underway to potentially strip 26 opposition members of the Punjab Assembly of their seats following their suspension for disruptive behavior during a recent session.

Sources revealed on Tuesday that the Speaker’s Office has initiated consultations with the Punjab Law Department to explore the constitutional and legal basis for removing the lawmakers. The Assembly secretariat confirmed that the process is in an early phase, with legal precedents and constitutional provisions currently being reviewed.

Officials involved in the discussions disclosed that a key ruling by former Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial—in the case concerning Hamza Shehbaz Sharif—is being referenced. That verdict dealt with violations of party discipline and may serve as a precedent for the current situation.

The suspended members are accused of causing serious disturbances on the Assembly floor, engaging in inappropriate conduct, and breaching the dignity of the legislative body. The Speaker’s Office is closely studying legal pathways, including judicial interpretations, before proceeding with any formal move toward disqualification.

At this stage, no final decision has been taken, but the groundwork is being laid for what could be a significant shake-up in the provincial legislature.
