LAHORE: The Punjab Assembly passed the Notaries Amendment Bill 2025 with a majority vote, triggering a fierce confrontation between the government and opposition parties.
During the session, the Parliamentary Affairs Minister sharply criticized the opposition’s proposed amendments, dismissing them as ineffective. His comments provoked an immediate and intense backlash from opposition members, who stood in protest and voiced their objections.
In response, Deputy Speaker Zaheer Iqbal Channar intervened, urging Minister Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman to refrain from making such remarks. However, the minister stood firm, asserting that he was under no obligation to accept the opposition’s proposals.
The deputy speaker called on the government to show more flexibility, issuing an apology on behalf of the minister and ordering the removal of the controversial remarks from the official record. He also remarked that power often breeds arrogance and suggested that the minister should have reconsidered his statements.
