Punjab Assembly speaker decides to drop disqualification proceedings against 26 opposition MPs after successful talk

A major development has occurred in the Punjab Assembly as the government and opposition reached an agreement regarding the suspension of 26 opposition Members of Provincial Assembly (MPAs).

Sources indicate that Punjab Assembly Speaker Malik Ahmad Khan has agreed to withdraw the disqualification referral submitted to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) against these opposition members. The assembly secretariat has prepared a draft to formally halt the proceedings before the ECP.

The final decision to retract the reference will be communicated after the speaker, who is currently abroad, gives his formal approval.

It is understood that earlier, government legislators had submitted requests to the speaker for disqualification references against the 26 opposition

Meanwhile, the opposition has declared that they will boycott upcoming Punjab Assembly sessions until their members are reinstated.

The suspension of these 26 opposition MPs had led to a political deadlock within the assembly, which was marked by disorderly conduct. To restore order and resolve the dispute, a bipartisan negotiation committee comprising members from both the ruling and opposition sides was formed to facilitate dialogue and address the issue.
