Punjab enforces section 144 for 10 days amid security concerns

LAHORE: In a significant security move, the Punjab government has announced the enforcement of Section 144 across the province for a period of ten days, effective immediately. The decision was conveyed through a formal notification issued by the Secretary of the Home Department.

According to the document, law enforcement agencies have provided credible intelligence indicating a heightened threat to public safety, peace, and property throughout Punjab. The reports point towards potential terrorist plots involving groups such as RAW, TTP, and BLA. Authorities expressed particular concern over the possibility of political and sectarian factions organizing gatherings or demonstrations that might jeopardize law and order.

To mitigate these risks, the government has prohibited public assemblies, processions, sit-ins, and the carrying of arms. Additionally, the use of loudspeakers and the distribution of provocative materials have been banned. This restriction will stay in place for the next ten days, starting immediately.

Meanwhile, Rawalpindi’s administration took similar precautionary measures a day earlier by imposing Section 144 for four days. This order bans public protests, rallies, and pillion riding amid heightened security concerns linked to the announced “Aqsa March” by Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), which aims to protest US support for Israel’s actions in Gaza.

Deputy Commissioner Dr. Hassan Waqar Cheema issued the order based on intelligence reports and recommendations from the District Intelligence Committee (DIC). The reports highlight a “serious risk” to human lives, infrastructure, and public property, especially around key areas and roads prone to disturbances caused by mobilizing groups.

Officials emphasized that these measures are necessary to ensure peace and prevent any untoward incidents during this sensitive period.
