Punjab floods death toll surges past 40

Lahore: The devastating floods that have wreaked havoc in Punjab have killed more than 40 people across various districts of the province so far, the authorities have confirmed.

At least seven people lost their lives in drowning incidents in a single day on Monday.

Punjab PDMA DG Irfan Ali Kathia said that protective embankments may be breached to save urban populations if critical gauges are attained.

The floods, he added, have so far affected 3,243 villages and settlements, impacting more than 2.45 million people.

PDMA further warned that the flood surge from River Chenab will reach Multan tonight via Head Trimmu, while the next 24 hours at Head Sidhnai are critical.

If levels rise further, areas of Pir Mahal and Khanewal could come under threat, he said.

River waters are expected to reach Panjnad by September 5 and enter Sindh between September 6 and 7. Official have  said major decisions have been taken and will be enforced immediately if the situation worsens.
