Punjab govt announces free public transportation during Basant days

LAHORE: The Punjab government has announced free bus and rickshaw services in Lahore on February 6, 7, and 8 during Basant festivities.

Provincial Information Minister Azma Bokhari stated the move aims to reduce motorcycle use and road accidents.

The government is also considering limited kite-related manufacturing starting December 30 under strict conditions. Metallic strings, chemically treated threads, or hazardous materials will remain banned. All manufacturers, sellers, and suppliers must register with the Deputy Commissioner, with violations leading to fines, imprisonment, or registration cancellation.

Only cotton-based thread is allowed for kite strings, with a maximum of nine strands to prevent injuries from sharp or reinforced materials. Strict penalties will apply to those caught selling or flying kites without permission.

A civil society representative noted that a regulated Basant could generate jobs and boost tourism. The Walled City Authority has been instructed to survey public opinions on hosting a safe Basant event.
