LAHORE: The Punjab government has approved a major infrastructure project worth Rs3.08 billion for the construction of two underpasses along GT Road in Gujar Khan, officials confirmed.
According to the Punjab Highway Department, one underpass will be developed at Guliana Mor, while the second is planned near the Technical Training College. The initiative is aimed at easing traffic congestion and reducing accidents on one of the region’s busiest roads.
To facilitate the project, local authorities have already removed several structures, including a Police Khidmat Centre, public washrooms, and roadside kiosks. More than 315 additional kiosks and buildings are also set to be cleared to make way for construction.
However, the demolition drive has sparked concern among small vendors who rely on these kiosks for their livelihoods. Many fear losing their only source of income.
Affected traders have appealed to Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, requesting the government to provide alternative land or relocation options so they can continue their businesses.
