LAHORE: In a significant boost to youth mobility, the Punjab government has launched the second phase of its Electric Bike Scheme for students, with an impressive registration of 432,000 students in just the first two days. The scheme aims to promote eco-friendly transportation among young learners across the province.
Eligibility criteria includ possessing a valid Punjab domicile or national identity card, being enrolled as a regular student in a government or private degree college or university approved by the Higher Education Commission (HEC). Applicants must be at least 18 years old and hold a learner’s or motorcycle driving license.
Under the new phase, only one student per family will be eligible to receive an e-bike. Following directives from Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the government has waived the initial down payment for students, with the state covering interest and insurance costs associated with the bikes.
Participants will pay a subsidized monthly installment of Rs 3,028, with helmets and safety gear provided free of charge. Additionally, the government will conduct a two-day training program to ensure proper and safe use of the e-bikes.
The administration has announced that the distribution process will be completed within six weeks, with efforts underway to facilitate quick delivery and implementation of the scheme for deserving students across Punjab.
