Punjab to begin flood relief, rehabilitation efforts from September 12

LAHORE: Following directives from Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the Punjab government is set to launch a comprehensive flood relief and recovery program, with a detailed damage assessment survey scheduled to start on September 12.

A high-level coordination meeting was convened at the PDMA headquarters in Lahore, chaired by Relief Commissioner Nabeel Javed, to discuss the framework for evaluating flood damage and providing aid to affected populations. Participants included Punjab’s Home Secretary Dr. Ahmed Javed Qazi, DG PDMA Irfan Ali Kathia, along with officials from irrigation, agriculture, local government, C&W, and urban development departments.

Relief official Nabeel Javed explained that the joint survey will involve representatives from the Urban Unit, Pakistan Army, revenue authorities, and departments of agriculture and livestock. The assessment will document data on human casualties, crop destruction, damaged dwellings, and livestock losses. So far, over 4,155 villages in Punjab have been impacted, affecting more than 4.15 million residents. Compensation packages include Rs. 1 million for families of deceased victims, along with financial aid for households whose homes have been partially or fully damaged.

Additional support will cover per-acre compensation for damaged crops and assistance for livestock owners who lost animals. The final approval and disbursement of relief funds will be overseen directly by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, ensuring transparency and prompt aid distribution to all affected individuals.
