Rahat, son honored at UK Parliament as cross-border Bangla Duet launches

LONDON: Renowned Pakistani musician Ustad Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and his son, Shahzaman Khan, received a formal tribute at the UK Houses of Parliament during an event dedicated to celebrating cultural diplomacy and musical excellence, uniting communities from India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.

The occasion was organized by British-Asian artist Raja Kaasheff to acknowledge Rahat and his son’s lasting influence and significant contributions to South Asian music. A key highlight was the debut of the innovative cross-border Bangla duet titled “Prem Piyasha Reloaded (Thirst for Love),” a collaborative project involving the UK, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and India. The song features Rahat alongside Rubayat Jahan, blending classical Qawwali traditions with modern romantic themes.

With lyrics penned by Kabir Bakul, music composed and arranged by Raja Kaasheff, and direction by Saikat Reza, the track was released under Dhruba Music Station. It serves as a symbolic cultural bridge across South Asia and the wider diaspora, emphasizing shared heritage and emotional bonds.

The event attracted a distinguished audience, including Ruth Cadbury, Ritu Prakash Chhabria, Asif Akbar, Tariq Ahmad, lawyer Farhan Farani, Baroness Uddin, Apsana Begum, Vijay Sharma, along with numerous Members of Parliament, Lords, and influential community leaders.

Speakers emphasized that the collaboration represented more than just a musical piece; it embodied a collective identity and a heartfelt connection that crosses borders. Raja Kaasheff remarked that unveiling the song within Parliament underscored music’s power as a unifying force capable of linking diverse cultures, languages, and nations. He described “Prem Piyasha – Reloaded” as a timeless love song capturing the essence of affection that surpasses geographical boundaries, highlighting Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s role in fostering unity through music.

Lord Tariq Ahmad praised Rahat’s enduring influence on South Asian and global music, noting that the legendary Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s legacy continues through Rahat and his son Shahzaman. He called the event a proud moment for South Asian cultural pride.

Expressing gratitude, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan thanked Raja Kaasheff and Rubayat Jahan for their creative collaboration, calling “Prem Piyasha” a meaningful and heartfelt project. He appreciated the honor bestowed by UK parliamentarians, emphasizing that the recognition extends beyond himself to celebrate South Asian musical traditions, Sufi Qawwali, and contemporary Urdu music.

Currently in London, Rahat recently performed to a sold-out crowd at the Royal Albert Hall and is scheduled for private performances with his full band later this week.
